Embark on an unforgettable adventure at the New River Trail Challenge, a unique 65.2-mile triathlon set against the stunning backdrop of Southwest Virginia's New River Trail State Park. Scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, in Max Meadows, VA, this race offers a distinctive blend of biking, kayaking, and running along America's oldest river. Known as Virginia's longest and longest-running adventure triathlon, the event maintains a cherished "family feel" while attracting competitors from across the country.

The challenge begins with a 40-mile out-and-back bike leg, starting from Foster Falls Amphitheater, traversing the flat, crushed cinder surface of the New River Trail. This scenic path, part of the "Rails to Trails" project, follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way, featuring two stone tunnels and 33 bridges and trestles, including the notable Jackson Ferry Shot Tower and Foster Falls Historic District. Following the cycling, participants transition to a 12.1-mile downriver kayak paddle on the New River, known for its smooth flow and small rapids under normal conditions. The race culminates with a half marathon run along the picturesque New River Trail, leading back to Foster Falls. This flattish course makes it an excellent choice for both beginners and accomplished athletes, with the option to compete solo or in teams of two or three.

Runners can expect typical race day conditions in mid-September with highs around 76°F and lows around 53°F, alongside a 14% chance of precipitation. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout the course, with water and basic snacks available during the bike stage at the starting line, Buck Dam, and near Fries, and every 2.5 to 3 miles during the run. However, participants are encouraged to carry sufficient hydration and nutrition, as this is a cupless race requiring runners to bring their own water bottles or cups. Limited to 300 entrants, the New River Trail Challenge promises a friendly atmosphere and a truly memorable experience amidst the natural beauty of the New River.
