The Night Crawler Endurance Challenge, set for August 14, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming, offers a truly unique overnight ultra-running experience on the scenic Casper Mountain. Celebrating its 10th edition, this event provides solo options for 4 hours and 12 hours, along with a 12-hour 4-person relay, making it central Wyoming's only time-based ultramarathon held through the night. Participants will navigate a rolling course atop the 8,100-foot Casper Mountain, featuring forested single-track and cross-country ski trails with minimal to moderate technical difficulty. The race kicks off at 6:30 PM under a beautiful August sunset, continuing under the glow of headlamps and moonlight, and concludes at 6:30 AM as the sun rises, revealing a stunning alpen-glow over the mountain.
Adding to the distinctive challenge, the course employs a "washing-machine" style, with runners switching directions each lap—odd-numbered laps run clockwise and even laps counterclockwise. Runners can set up tents, hammocks, or chairs in the start/lap/finish area at the Nordic stadium near the Casper Mountain Trails Center, fostering a strong sense of community and providing convenient spots for breaks between laps. Typical race day conditions in mid-August include highs around 87°F and lows around 52°F, with a minimal 3% chance of precipitation, creating ideal conditions for cool night running.
The Night Crawler is more than just a race; it's an opportunity to test mental fortitude and enjoy the camaraderie of the trail running community. The event embraces a philosophy where there are no DNFs, encouraging participants to complete as many miles or laps as they can. Following the overnight challenge, a hot breakfast awaits participants, providing a perfect conclusion to this unforgettable nocturnal adventure.
