About This Race

Embark on a unique twilight adventure at the Night Train 50k and Half Marathon, set for June 20, 2026, in historic Farmville, Virginia. Celebrating its ninth year, this race offers a 50K, Half Marathon, and a captivating sunset 5K, alongside hiker-friendly options, all beginning and ending at Camp Paradise. The course unfolds on a relatively flat, crushed gravel rail trail, guiding runners through picturesque countryside, charming small towns, and the historic landscape of Farmville, including sites from the Civil War. A highlight is crossing the impressive High Bridge, Virginia's longest recreational bridge, stretching 2,400 feet and soaring 125 feet above the Appomattox River. As daylight fades, runners will experience the magic of fireflies twinkling along the path, with the moon illuminating their journey to the finish line, which also crosses the iconic High Bridge.

While the course is generally flat, typical race day conditions in late June bring highs around 86°F and lows around 64°F, with a 14% chance of precipitation, making hydration crucial. Runners are required to carry at least 20 ounces of water to avoid disqualification, and the event is cupless, so bring your portable cup. Aid stations, though well-stocked with water, electrolytes, and various snacks including "ultra fare" like PB&J squares and sometimes warm quesadillas, are spaced out. The 50K route features aid stations at Osborne Road, Tuggle, and Prospect, where 50K participants can also access drop bags and meet pacers for the latter half of the race.

The Night Train isn't just a race; it's an experience. Runners start in the late afternoon or early evening, with the 50K beginning at 6:00 PM, the Half Marathon at 6:30 PM, and the 5K at 8:00 PM, ensuring a memorable run under the stars. Finishers receive an award, and the top three male and female runners in each distance earn beautiful, handmade pottery. For those seeking an extra challenge, the Night Train is also part of the High Bridge Challenge, combining with the Freight Train race for a unique two-race series.
