The Not A Sprint Ultra Races, held on September 6, 2026, in Forest City, NC, invites runners of all levels to an inspiring day of endurance and community. This annual event, presented by Cancer Active, embodies the philosophy that "cancer is not a sprint—it's a marathon," bringing participants together with purpose. Choose your challenge from timed races of 3, 6, or 12 hours, with the ultimate goal for many in the 12-hour event being to complete 50 miles (approximately six laps) to earn a distinctive "Not-A-Sprint" belt buckle.
The course itself is designed to be accessible yet rewarding. Runners will navigate an approximately 8.34-mile out-and-back paved loop along the scenic Thermal Belt Rail Trail, starting and finishing at the Pavilion on Park Square (POPS) in Forest City. With a remarkably flat profile featuring only about 95 feet of elevation change per loop, this course is welcoming to both seasoned ultrarunners chasing big mileage and new athletes or walkers tackling their first endurance challenge. Roughly 35% of the route offers shade, providing some relief from the typical race day conditions, which usually see highs around 85°F and lows around 63°F, with a 15% chance of precipitation.
Runners can expect exceptional support throughout their journey. Well-stocked aid stations provide water, electrolytes, and various food choices, with a main hub at POPS in Forest City and an additional aid station in Spindale. Drop bags are available for transport to the Spindale aid station, and support crews are welcome to assist runners in the designated Forest City aid station area. Medical personnel will also be on-site in Forest City for any assistance needed. The Not A Sprint Ultra Races offers a uniquely supportive and purposeful environment, inviting individuals, and even relay teams, to push their limits while contributing to Cancer Active's mission of promoting health and active lifestyles for cancer patients.
