Prepare for an exhilarating journey through Hillsborough's natural beauty and history at the Occoneechee Mountain Challenge, a compelling 10-mile race held on Sunday, February 22, 2026. This unique event kicks off and concludes at the historic Occoneechee Speedway Track, the last remaining dirt track from NASCAR's early days, offering a truly distinctive start and finish line experience. Organized by the Hillsborough Running Club, this community favorite race provides an engaging blend of challenging terrain and stunning scenery.

The course is a dynamic mix of paved paths and rugged single-track trails, designed to test and reward runners. Participants will traverse the scenic Riverwalk, part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, passing the historic Occaneechi Indian Village and winding through Gold Park. The middle third of the race introduces its namesake challenge: an ascent to the peak of Occoneechee Mountain, the highest point in Orange County, boasting approximately 700 to 800 feet of elevation gain packed into this section. Expect technical singletrack with rocks, roots, steps, and potentially mud, especially after rain, making for an adventurous "slipe-and-slide" experience that many runners embrace. Beyond the physical test, runners are treated to breathtaking views of riverside forests, mountain laurel, and rhododendron thickets, showcasing a diverse natural community that includes rare species like the brown elfin butterfly.

Upon conquering the mountain, runners return to the Speedway for a well-deserved celebration. The post-race atmosphere is legendary, featuring award-winning beef and veggie chili, fresh bread, and hot coffee to refuel and relax. Aid stations are available, including one around the 2.5-mile mark at Gold Park. With typical race day conditions seeing highs around 56°F and lows around 34°F, and only a 17% chance of precipitation, runners can anticipate crisp, invigorating weather ideal for a challenging trail run.
