Onyx by Double Black Events

Prepare for a trail running experience unlike any other at Onyx by Double Black Events, hitting the stunning desert landscapes of Fort McDowell, Arizona, on April 4, 2026. This unique race completely redefines traditional trail running by focusing on a strategic, points-based competition rather than simply speed. Runners choose from two timed divisions: the 4-hour Onyx and the 8-hour Onyx Ultra, challenging participants to maximize their score within their chosen timeframe.

Set within the beautiful McDowell Mountain Regional Park, the course offers incredible views and a challenging desert terrain, featuring varied surfaces with some rocks, roots, and ruts, and enough climbing to keep things engaging. Participants can craft their own strategy by selecting from five diverse out-and-back trails, ranging from 0.5 to 12 miles roundtrip, each with different point values. To earn points, runners must retrieve either a flag for standard points or a sandbag for 1.5 times the route's value, allowing for a personalized challenge that caters to all skill levels.

Upon completing each lap and dropping off their flags or sandbags, runners return to a well-stocked Points Tent and Recovery Zone, offering opportunities to refuel with nutrition items before heading back out on the trails. Typical race day conditions in early April in Fort McDowell boast pleasant highs around 84°F and lows around 51°F, with a minimal 2% chance of precipitation.
