The Pilot Hill 25k, held on May 30, 2026, in Laramie, Wyoming, invites runners to experience a piece of Wyoming's running history. As the state's oldest continuously run footrace, dating back to the 1970s, this event offers a distinctly "down-home" atmosphere for both seasoned trail runners and those looking for a challenging new adventure. In 2026, a new 10K option will also be available, providing more ways to explore the stunning landscape.
The course is renowned for its rugged charm, guiding participants over sandy flats, low-grade hills, and stretches of "gnarly weathered limestone" on a mix of two-track and single-track trails. Runners will face a consistent climb to the 8600-foot summit of Pilot Hill, one of the highest points in the Sherman Mountains, where breathtaking panoramic views of the Laramie Valley, the distant Snowy Range, Medicine Bow Mountains, and even Colorado's Rawahs and Front Range await. Portions of the course traverse private land, typically inaccessible to the public, making this race a unique opportunity to explore the region's hidden gems. Aid stations, strategically placed at mile 3.7 (revisited at mile 12.6) with water and Skratch, and at the Pilot Hill summit with water, Skratch, and snacks, will support runners along the way; however, this is a cupless race, so participants should come prepared with their own hydration vessels.
Runners can anticipate typical race day conditions with highs around 67°F and lows near 38°F, with a minimal 4% chance of precipitation, making for ideal trail running weather. Beyond the challenging terrain and incredible scenery, the Pilot Hill 25k fosters a supportive community spirit. Proceeds from the event are dedicated to Pilot Hill Inc., contributing to the preservation of the Casper aquifer, critical wildlife habitats, and expanding non-motorized recreation access in the Laramie foothills. Finishers can look forward to post-race food and refreshments, and are encouraged to bring a camp chair to relax and soak in the camaraderie at the Pilot Hill Recreation Area finish line.
