Pioneer Prairie Dog Half Marathon, 10k and 5k

Lace up for the Pioneer Prairie Dog Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in scenic Westminster, Colorado. This popular event, known as the originator of the Prairie Dog Race Series, offers a refreshing "mental health break" with a focus on fitness and fun as summer winds down. Runners of all levels can choose their challenge, from the demanding half marathon to the spirited 10K or the enjoyable 5K.

The course, starting and finishing at Westminster Promenade Terrace, blends both paved and packed gravel paths, guiding participants alongside the Big Dry Trail and including a detour around Metzger Farm. While largely considered "fast & flat," the route does feature "some hills" and promises engaging views of both the city and the distant mountainous horizons. Aid stations are strategically placed approximately every two miles starting around mile three, providing water and electrolyte replacement, with energy gels (GU brand) available at the final aid station. Typical race day conditions in late August show highs around 90F and lows around 56F, with a minimal 4% chance of precipitation, creating a dynamic environment for racing.

Adding to its unique charm, the Pioneer Prairie Dog race welcomes both dogs on short leashes (starting at the back of the pack) and strollers, with jogging strollers recommended for the gravel sections.
