Embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Michigan's wild Upper Peninsula with the Rock River Canyon Trail Run on June 6, 2026. Starting from the welcoming Valley Spur Lodge in Munising, this event, now operated by Aravaipa Running and building on the legacy of Great Lakes Endurance since 2000, offers runners a choice of a challenging 50K or a scenic 27K distance. The course is a magnificent blend of high country and remote river valleys, immersing participants in "Zen quality single track" through Beech-Maple Forests and alongside massive Hemlock stands and wildflowers. The 50K route boasts approximately 4390 feet of elevation change over 31 miles, featuring frequent yet manageable ascents and descents that make it highly runnable and an excellent step up for marathoners looking to tackle their first ultra. The 27K, meanwhile, offers a pure single-track experience.
Runners will traverse a rarely followed section of the North Country Trail to the Rock River Canyon Wilderness, where sandstone canyons and dense forests create a truly secluded and peaceful atmosphere. With 26 miles of single track and just 5 miles of dirt forest road for the 50K, the terrain is described as moderate and non-technical, allowing runners to truly connect with the wild backcountry. Six aid stations are strategically placed every 4-5.4 miles, stocked with water, Gnarly Fuel2O, Hammer Energy Gels, and Endurolytes, ensuring ample support. Typical race day conditions in early June offer pleasant highs around 66F and lows around 45F, with only a 14% chance of precipitation, providing ideal running weather.
What truly sets the Rock River Canyon race apart is its intimate atmosphere, with a participant limit of 100 runners, often allowing for moments of solitude on the trail. Finishers are awarded a custom hardwood engraved medal, and age group winners receive a unique prize: a bottle of local maple syrup, a delightful tribute to the region. This event promises a "gem of a race" for those seeking a challenging yet deeply rewarding trail running experience in the serene wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
