Prepare to "Take the Bite" at the Rock, Roll and Rattlesnake Challenge, an authentic West Texas adventure race set to unfold on May 2, 2026. Nestled in Haskell County, Paint Creek, TX, this challenging event is hosted on a rugged, beautiful private ranch, offering a rare opportunity to explore terrain typically inaccessible to the public. Choose your challenge with either the 16-hour or 8-hour sprint adventure race, both designed to test your limits across diverse disciplines including mountain biking on gravel, trails, and ranch roads, demanding trekking through rugged landscapes, and open lake paddling (BYOB). Navigation skills are paramount, as participants will rely on orienteering and map skills, including plotting UTM coordinates, to conquer this off-grid course.
Since its inception in 1999 by Rattlesnake Racing, the RRRC has earned a reputation for its unique blend of extreme weather, challenging terrain, and powerful winds, promising an experience that's far from a typical "bag and tag" race. The course itself is a wild West Texas tapestry, teeming with cactus, mesquite, and other thorny flora, living up to the race's namesake and demanding a true sense of adventure. While the 8-hour sprint features navigation guard rails suitable for beginners, both distances are crafted to challenge even the most seasoned adventure racers. Typical race day conditions in early May feature highs around 80°F and lows around 53°F, with a slight 10% chance of precipitation, though the race is known for its weather extremes.
Beyond the race itself, the Rock, Roll and Rattlesnake Challenge is a full weekend experience. Primitive camping is available at no cost at the main transition area, which serves as the hub for the 4 AM (16HR) and 8 AM (8HR) starts. While the main race site is primitive with no running water or electricity, a pre-race potato supper on Friday evening and a celebratory Wagyu Brisket dinner post-race on Saturday ensure racers and their support crews are well-fueled and embraced by true Texan hospitality. This is more than a race; it’s an opportunity to create lasting memories and push your boundaries in a truly unforgettable setting.
