About This Race

Lace up for an unforgettable adventure at Run the Trailbreaker, Waukesha, Wisconsin's signature running event, taking place on Sunday, March 29, 2026. This celebrated tradition, which began in 1993, offers a distance for every runner, including a 26.2M marathon, 13.1M half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a Kiddos 1K, with new additions for 2026 like the Rucking race and Run Any Distance (RAD) option. Typical race day conditions in late March present crisp air, with historical highs around 48°F and lows near 29°F, and a modest 13% chance of precipitation, offering ideal running weather. All races, except for the Lapham Peak Marathon, kick off and conclude at the home plate of Frame Ballpark, adjacent to the Schuetze Recreation Center, where runners can also find packet pick-up and indoor restrooms.

The Trailbreaker marathon course is a diverse and engaging journey, encompassing approximately four miles of city streets and sidewalks, 15 miles of paved trails including the scenic Glacial Drumlin Trail and Fox River Trail, and a challenging seven-mile stretch on the rugged Ice Age Trail. Marathoners will experience a net climb of 438 feet on the way out, matched by a net drop on the return, culminating in a unique turnaround at the summit of the 40-foot Lapham Peak Tower, the highest point in Waukesha County. Here, runners are rewarded with spectacular views and the chance to ring a bell, marking their halfway accomplishment and earning "bragging rights". For those opting for shorter distances, the half marathon follows the initial leg of the marathon before an earlier turnaround at mile seven, bypassing the Ice Age Trail and tower. The 10K turns around at mile 3.6, while the family-friendly 5K unfolds entirely within beautiful Frame Park, alongside the Fox River.

Beyond the diverse terrain and stunning scenery, Run the Trailbreaker stands out for its strong community ties and support. Aid stations, strategically placed approximately every two miles and passed twice, are well-stocked with water, sports drinks, and energy gels, with volunteers often noted for their enthusiastic cheering. The event is a key fundraiser for the Park Foundation of Waukesha, with proceeds contributing to the enhancement of city parks, trails, and recreation programs, having reinvested over $200,000 to $300,000 in the community. Participants will receive a custom "woodle" finisher medal, and top overall and age group finishers are recognized with unique awards. With its USATF-certified courses and reputation as a well-organized and enjoyable event, the Trailbreaker is an ideal race to kick off your running season or challenge yourself on Wisconsin's picturesque trails.
