Embark on an unforgettable trail adventure at the Run With The Deer Flies, returning to the scenic Camp Seph Mack in Penn Run, PA, on Sunday, July 26, 2026. This esteemed event, organized by the Indiana Road Runners Club, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience across three distances: 25K, 15K, and the popular 8K, which is perfect for both seasoned trail runners and those new to the off-road experience.
The course is renowned for its diverse and demanding terrain, guiding runners through a captivating mix of single-track trails, pipeline roads, technical hills, and refreshing creek crossings, sometimes even navigating through swamps. Expect significant elevation changes, particularly on the 25K course with an approximate 636-meter gain, which features steeper and more technical climbs in the latter half that will test your endurance. The route is celebrated for its natural beauty, winding through wooded landscapes that showcase the best of Camp Seph Mack. Aid stations are strategically placed approximately every four miles, but carrying your own water is highly recommended to stay hydrated amidst the typical race day conditions, with highs around 79°F and lows around 58°F, and a 19% chance of precipitation.
What truly sets "Run With The Deer Flies" apart is its unique charm and community atmosphere. Runners often "power-hike" the steeper inclines, finding camaraderie in the shared challenge. Finishers are celebrated with a medal and the traditional "Deer Fly Swatter," a nod to the race's namesake. Post-race, enjoy delicious burgers and hot dogs grilled by ultra runner Ryan Knecht. Top male and female finishers in each distance are awarded artisan-made wooden bowls, and lucky participants can win $25 gift cards to Luigi's Ristorante through random drawings. This event also benefits Indiana County Parks & Trails and Citizens' Ambulance Service. With each race capped at 100 runners, early registration is encouraged to secure your spot in this exhilarating Pennsylvania trail race.
