About This Race

Lace up for an unforgettable trail running experience at the Salmon Falls 50K, returning to Pilot Hill, CA, on February 28, 2026. This esteemed event, also featuring a Half Marathon, is a highlight for many, not only for its challenging course but also for its commitment as a non-profit benefiting Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) to support type 1 diabetes research. Renowned for its excellent organization, well-marked trails, and vibrant atmosphere, the Salmon Falls 50K has garnered a reputation as a favorite for both seasoned ultrarunners and those tackling their first ultra.

The point-to-point 50K course begins at the Magnolia Ranch Trailhead, immediately immersing runners in the adventurous terrain of the Cronan Ranch area. Expect nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain, with the majority concentrated in the challenging first half, featuring rolling hills, technical rocky sections, and picturesque creek crossings. As you navigate through native oak groves and open grass meadows, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Sacramento Valley, Folsom Lake, and the American River. The Half Marathon, starting at the Sweetwater Trail parking area, offers approximately 1,400 feet of vertical gain over flowy singletrack, providing a fantastic, runnable experience along Folsom Lake. Both distances will culminate at the Browns Ravine finish line for 2026, due to levee construction, incorporating new trails at Salmon Falls Ranch into the 50K route.

Runners can anticipate exceptional support throughout the race, with six fully stocked aid stations and an additional self-serve water station for the 50K, offering everything from water and electrolytes to sodas, gels, fruit, chips, and even PB&J sandwiches. The highly praised volunteers are a cornerstone of the race, providing invaluable encouragement along the way. Upon crossing the finish line, celebrate your accomplishment at a lively post-race party complete with food, beer, and a live DJ. Typical race day conditions in late February offer cool starts around 38F, warming to pleasant highs of approximately 57F, with a 25% chance of precipitation. With generous swag, including a premium half-zip pullover and a locally made finisher medal, the Salmon Falls 50K promises a memorable journey through California's gold country.
