About This Race

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Sam Houston National Forest with Sam's Last Stand, a formidable 96-mile ultra-endurance event set for February 28, 2026. This fatass-style race challenges a limited field of 25 runners to conquer the entire 96-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT), the longest contiguous trail in Texas, with a 36-hour cut-off. The course winds its way from Trailhead 1 on the western terminus to Trailhead 15 near Cleveland, TX, promising a scenic yet demanding experience amidst towering pines, fragrant magnolias, trickling creeks, and the chance to encounter local wildlife.

Runners should be prepared for a largely self-supported adventure. While minimal water caches will be provided, drop bags are permitted at designated waypoints, though not under constant supervision, reinforcing the self-reliance central to this race's spirit. The LSHT is primarily marked with 2” x 4” aluminum markers and wooden directional signs, but runners are advised to carry the route on their phones and be proficient in navigation. Pacers are allowed from mile 20 (Stubblefield) to offer support. Be ready for varied terrain, including road sections, and potential encounters with natural elements like spiderwebs, poison ivy, hogs, coyotes, and even aggressive farm dogs. Typical race day conditions in late February see comfortable highs around 70F and lows around 46F, with a low 10% chance of precipitation.

Sam's Last Stand is more than just a race; it's a true test of endurance and self-sufficiency on one of Texas's most iconic trails. Runners will need to come prepared with essential gear, including a rain jacket, gloves, beanie, and extra calories, to tackle the unpredictable demands of this challenging course. While competitive, with Fastest Known Times for the LSHT pushing sub-20 hours, this event celebrates the grit and determination required to traverse the entire length of this beautiful, wild trail.
