Sault International Festival of Races

Lace up for an unforgettable two-day running experience at the Sault International Festival of Races, returning to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, on September 26-27, 2026. This esteemed event, a long-time favorite among Upper Peninsula runners, offers a unique opportunity to challenge yourself amidst stunning natural and historical backdrops. Typical race day conditions in late September offer crisp, invigorating air with highs around 64°F and lows around 46°F, and only a 15% chance of precipitation, creating ideal running weather.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, September 26th, with its signature 5 Mile International Bridge Run. This exceptional course starts and finishes at the historic Lake Superior State University Arts Center and takes runners across the iconic International Bridge, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Soo Locks, the St. Mary's Rapids, and passing freighters. The route is primarily fast and flat, though runners will encounter inclines on the bridge itself, and a strict 15-minute per mile pace must be maintained to ensure timely bridge reopening. While crossing, participants will experience a truly international feel, turning around before Canadian customs, meaning no passport is required to enjoy this remarkable run.

The festivities continue on Sunday, September 27th, with the Half Marathon (13.1M), 5 Mile, and 5K (3.1M) Run/Walk events. These races, which do not cross the International Bridge, start and finish in the vibrant heart of downtown Sault Ste. Marie, showcasing the city's charm and the beautiful fall foliage. All participants are supported with aid stations featuring water and electrolyte beverages approximately every 1.7 to 2 miles along the course. Finishers will be rewarded with unique, commemorative medals—a different design for each day's events—celebrating their achievement.
