Runners will traverse rugged, unpaved historic trails, experiencing the serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere of the ancient Giant Sequoias in Nelder Grove. The 50K boasts approximately 3,219 feet of elevation gain, reaching a maximum altitude of around 6,271 feet, while the 20K presents a hilly course with about 1,713 feet of climb. Typical race day conditions in early June feature pleasant highs around 65°F and lows near 50°F, with a minimal 5% chance of precipitation, creating ideal running weather.
The Shadow of the Giants race draws experienced trail runners seeking an immersive nature experience, known for its small, laid-back atmosphere and the strong loyalty it inspires among participants. Aid stations, strategically placed roughly every 5-7 miles, are well-stocked with essentials including Spring Energy Gels, Gatorade, water, Coca-Cola, ginger ale, fruit, salty and sweet snacks, PB&J, pickles, and basic first aid to keep you fueled. The start and finish are located at Camp Green Meadows Outdoor School, which also offers convenient onsite dorm lodging and a traditional pre-race lasagna dinner the night before the event.
