Prepare for an extraordinary journey at the inaugural Show Me Your Free State Marathon and Ultra, set for Saturday, October 24, 2026, in St. Joseph, Missouri. This unique event, starting and finishing at the Rosecrans Memorial Airport, truly lives up to its name, with the majority of its scenic 25-mile loop course traversing into Kansas, the "Free State," an intriguing geographical quirk caused by a historic shift in the Missouri River. Runners can choose from challenging distances, including a 100-mile, 50-mile, 50-kilometer, full marathon, and half marathon.

The course promises a captivating experience, guiding participants along the Missouri Riverbank, through the Gladden Bottoms, and near the gentle undulations of the Loess Hills. With a modest elevation gain of approximately 138 feet per loop, the route features a varied surface of paved roads, a short stretch of dirt road that may be muddy, and extensive gravel or crushed limestone levee trails. Expect quiet, picturesque scenery, abundant autumn foliage, and frequent sightings of local wildlife such as deer and bald eagles. Runners will find comprehensive support with multiple manned aid stations offering water, sports drinks, various snacks, fruit, sweets, and even hot food and beverages after sunset for the longer distances. Unmanned stations also provide water and limited snacks between manned stops. Drop bag access is available for 50-mile and 100-mile participants at designated locations.

Typical race day conditions in late October often present ideal running weather, with average highs around 64°F and lows near 39°F, and only an 8% chance of precipitation.
