About This Race

Lace up your trail shoes for the Skunk Hollow Sneaker Chase & Backyard Ultra, set to challenge runners on Saturday, July 18, 2026, amidst the breathtaking scenery of Casper Mountain, Wyoming. This event, now in its second year, proudly hosts Wyoming's first and only true Backyard Ultra, a format famously pioneered by Lazarus Lake. Both races utilize a challenging 4.15-4.20 mile loop on forested cross-country ski and single-track trails within the Natrona County Parks Multi-Use Trail System. Runners will tackle elevations ranging from 7,800 to 8,100 feet, with each lap boasting approximately 450 feet of gain, providing a true test of mountain running prowess. Typical race day conditions in mid-July bring highs around 91F and lows near 55F, with a minimal 4% chance of precipitation.

Participants can choose between the 8-mile "Sneaker Chase," consisting of two laps, or the demanding Backyard Ultra, where runners complete a 4.17-mile lap every hour on the hour until only one remains. The 8-mile race features a clockwise direction in this even-numbered year, while the Backyard Ultra's lap direction is determined by a coin toss. The race fosters a grassroots, laid-back atmosphere that trail runners cherish, encouraging camaraderie and pushing personal limits. All race activities, including parking, start, finish, and post-race festivities, are centralized at the Casper Mountain Trails Center.

While personal aid is restricted to the main start/finish area, an aid station will be available to support runners through their efforts. The 8-mile finishers will receive awards, with age group prizes for the top three males and females in 39 & Under and 40 & Up categories, and food and beverages provided upon completion. Spectators are highly encouraged to bring cowbells and noisemakers to cheer on participants, creating an energetic and supportive environment on Casper Mountain.
