Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon and 5K

The Half Marathon treats participants to an "almost pure downhill" course along the stunning Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (Highway 14A), beginning in Savoy and concluding at Spearfish City Park. Runners will marvel at towering limestone canyon walls, dense coniferous and deciduous trees, and the serene Spearfish Creek accompanying much of the route, where even parts of the film "Dances With Wolves" were shot. With a net elevation loss of approximately 1,300 feet over the 13.1 miles, the course is designed for speed, though runners should be prepared for the final flat mile into the park, which can feel challenging after the consistent descent. This USATF-certified course is open to traffic, requiring runners to stay on the left side of the road. Aid stations are well-spaced with water and Gatorade, and porta-potties are available at the start and at three locations along the route.

For those opting for the 5K, the race offers a scenic loop starting and finishing in Spearfish City Park, winding through the campground and along a bike path before connecting with the scenic byway.
