The Spook Hill Cider & Wine 4 Mile Run is renowned for its unique hybrid road and cross-country course, which winds through some of Frederick County's most picturesque landscapes. Participants will embark on a journey through historic Burkittsville, experiencing the famous "Spook Hill" optical illusion where cars appear to roll uphill, before traversing Boordy's South Mountain Vineyard, the historic Burkittsville Union Cemetery, and the expansive farmlands of South Mountain Creamery. The route culminates with a loop around the Distillery Lane Ciderworks' orchard for runners, offering a truly distinctive experience. Race Director Bill Susa is dedicated to providing a "great course and a wonderful, inclusive race-day experience," a reputation that helped the event earn a "Must Do" fall race accolade in the Mid-Atlantic Region from Competitor.com in 2014.
Starting and finishing in front of the Burkittsville Ruritan Community Center, the race fosters an energetic atmosphere. All finishers will receive a commemorative wine glass and a medal, celebrating their accomplishment. Beyond the run, participants can explore the Spook Hill Tasting Trail, featuring local wineries and cideries like Antietam Creek Vineyards and Willow Oaks Craft Cider & Wine, promising a festive post-race celebration. This spirited event, hosted by the South Mountain Heritage Society since 2008, brings together friends, families, and runners of all skill levels for a truly memorable October day.
