Experience the breathtaking beauty of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, at the Spring Creek Memorial Trail Run on Saturday, July 18, 2026. This cherished event, held in memory of Patty Brenner Hagberg to underscore the importance of sharing multi-purpose trails, invites runners to immerse themselves in the stunning Routt National Forest. Participants can choose between a challenging 9.5-mile loop or a scenic 3.1-mile (5K) out-and-back course, both promising picturesque views of wildflowers, Aspen trees, and the serene, bubbling Spring Creek. Typical race day conditions in mid-July feature comfortable highs around 86°F and lows near 52°F, with a low 4% chance of precipitation, creating ideal trail running weather.
The 9.5-mile course is a true mountain trail adventure, winding its way up the old stage route to Buffalo Pass before descending back to the Spring Creek Reservoir. Runners will navigate a diverse terrain of primitive trail, two-track, single-track, and brief sections of forest service road. The route demands an ascent of approximately 1,750 feet in the initial four miles, with a significant portion of this climb on unimproved, rocky, and narrow single-track, even featuring several downed trees, before transitioning to a smooth, rolling downhill. This longer distance also boasts at least a dozen stream crossings over charming bridges, adding to its unique character. A single, fully stocked aid station is available around mile 4 at the Dry Lake parking area, before the downhill segment begins.
For those seeking a less strenuous but equally beautiful experience, the 3.1-mile (5K) course follows an out-and-back path along the Spring Creek trail, offering rolling two-track and single-track terrain. While the 5K does not feature an aid station, a volunteer will be present at the turnaround. Both distances emphasize a cupless approach, so runners are encouraged to bring their own hydration systems. Post-race, all participants can look forward to a delicious meal provided by Freshies and a prize drawing, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere at the finish line near the Spring Creek Road gazebo.
