Prepare to kick off your spring racing season with a historic challenge at the Spring Thaw, marking its remarkable 50th anniversary on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Allison Park, PA. As Pennsylvania's longest continuously run race, the Spring Thaw offers distances of 5, 10, 15, and 20 miles, making it an ideal training event for the Pittsburgh Marathon or other spring races. The course begins and ends at North Park's iconic boathouse, guiding runners on scenic, counterclockwise loops around North Park Lake. Typical race day conditions in late February see highs around 43F and lows around 23F, with a 14% chance of precipitation, embracing the true spirit of a "thaw."
Runners can expect excellent course support, with three volunteer-led aid stations per 5-mile loop, located at Mile 1.75 (Lake Shore Drive), Mile 3.5 (Ingomar Road), and Mile 5 (the Boathouse). The Boathouse aid station will also provide GU for those tackling the 15 and 20-mile distances. Beyond the picturesque views and well-supported course, every participant will receive a commemorative 50th Anniversary long-sleeve tee, socks, and a finisher medal. The experience culminates with a well-loved tradition: delicious hot soup waiting at the Rose Barn post-race, a perfect way to warm up and celebrate your accomplishment. This event is also a proud supporter of 412 Food Rescue.
The Spring Thaw is also a key component of the "Conquer the Cold" Winter Challenge, inviting runners to test their mettle against winter temperatures and notable course features like the notorious "Mile 1 climb." Whether you're aiming for a personal best, a long training run, or simply seeking a vibrant community experience, this race promises a memorable start to your racing year.
