Embark on a "squatchtastic Trail Party" at the Squatchapple Trail Race, set to challenge and delight runners on March 7, 2026, in the scenic South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ. This highly popular event, known for selling out in past years, offers a range of distances including 50M, 33M, 20M, and 11M, welcoming runners and hikers of all paces. Participants can expect typical race day conditions in early March with highs around 47°F and lows near 29°F, and a 12% chance of precipitation, though the race has earned the affectionate nickname "The Slopapple" due to past "spicy" weather and potentially muddy trails, making sturdy trail shoes a wise choice.

The course itself is a dynamic blend of hard-packed carriage trails and technical singletrack, laden with rocks and roots, comprising approximately 95% unpaved surfaces. Runners will navigate a series of three distinct loops that combine to form their chosen distance, starting and finishing at the Tulip Springs / Boy Scout Area. Expect significant elevation changes, such as a challenging 300-foot gain over half a mile on the steep Lenape Trail, and a fast 200-foot rocky descent that marks the end of each loop. Total elevation gains range from 1,185 feet for the 11M, 2,155 feet for the 20M, approximately 3,860 feet for the 33M (based on 50K data), and a substantial 5,790 feet for the 50M distance.

The Squatchapple is renowned for its vibrant community atmosphere and goes beyond just the run. Well-stocked aid stations at the main covered pavilion offer a variety of traditional ultra-running food, including vegan and gluten-free options, and runners are encouraged to set up their own personal aid stations in the accessible parking lot. Finishing this unique event earns participants a handcrafted finisher medal. As a true celebration of trail running, the race proudly supports the South Mountain Conservancy. Whether you're a seasoned ultrarunner or looking for your first trail race, the Squatchapple offers a bit of everything, promising an engaging experience amidst beautiful trails.
