Embark on a "squatchtastic Trail Party" at the Squatchapple, hosted by Sassquad Trail Running on March 7, 2026, in the scenic South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ. This popular event, which has sold out for the past four years, offers a range of challenging distances including 50M, 50K, 20M, and 11M, catering to runners and hikers of all paces. The course, starting and finishing at the Tulip Springs / Boy Scout Area, features a dynamic mix of hard-packed carriage trails and technical singletrack laden with rocks and roots, with approximately 95% of the route on unpaved surfaces.

Runners will navigate three distinct loops (4, 5.5, and 7 miles) that combine to form their chosen distance. Expect significant climbs, such as a 300-foot gain over half a mile on the steep Lenape Trail within the 5.5-mile loop, and a 200-foot rocky descent that marks the end of each loop. The 50M distance boasts an elevation gain of 5,790 feet, while the 50K tackles 3,860 feet, the 20M sees 2,155 feet, and the 11M loop includes 1,185 feet of climbing. While the course is predominantly trail, the 7-mile loop includes a couple of brief, legally mandated road crossings. Aid stations, located at the main covered pavilion at the start/finish area, are well-stocked with a variety of traditional ultra-running food, including vegan and gluten-free options, and runners are welcome to set up their own personal aid stations in the parking lot for easy access after each loop.

The Squatchapple is renowned for its vibrant community atmosphere and unique handcrafted finisher medals. Supporting the South Mountain Conservancy, the race is a true celebration of trail running. Typical race day conditions in early March can see highs around 47°F and lows near 29°F, with a 12% chance of precipitation. Be prepared for varied weather, as the event has earned the affectionate nickname "The Slopapple" due to past "spicy" weather patterns and potentially muddy trails, making sturdy trail shoes a wise choice. Pacers are permitted for all runners at sunset, and for athletes over 60 or with disabilities at any time.
