Squatchy Surprise

The Squatchy Surprise, set for July 25, 2026, at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey, offers a truly distinctive challenge for trail runners. This timed event, featuring 3-hour, 6-hour, and 12-hour options, is renowned for its unpredictable "luck of the draw" format that promises a fresh adventure with every loop. Runners will navigate a course blending hard-packed carriage trails with technical singletrack, complete with roots and rocks, through the scenic reservation.

What truly sets the Squatchy Surprise apart is its innovative loop selection system. Before embarking on each new circuit, participants draw a colored golf ball from a bucket, which dictates one of four unique trail loops to be completed next. These loops vary in length, from approximately one mile to nearly five miles, ensuring a dynamic and mentally engaging experience. Should a runner draw a black golf ball, they earn "runner's choice," adding a strategic layer to their race. For a small $20 donation, a "Charity-Mulligan" allows a re-draw, with proceeds supporting Bigger Than The Trail, a non-profit dedicated to funding free therapy through trail running advocacy.

The central "Squatch HQ" aid station, located at the Tulip Springs picnic area, is a well-provisioned hub.
