About This Race

Get ready for an unforgettable blend of athletic challenge and vibrant culture at the 4th Annual Swift Bear Trail Run, set for Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Hays, Montana. This unique event, offering 50K, 20-mile, and 10-mile distances, unfolds within the stunning Mission Canyon of the Little Rocky Mountains, coinciding with the lively Hays Powwow. Runners will navigate a challenging course featuring dramatic limestone cliffs, natural bridges, and ancient canyon formations carved by Peoples Creek, providing breathtaking scenery throughout traditional tribal lands. The varied terrain includes two-track roads, gravel paths, and some pavement sections, with the 20-mile loop traversing mountain trails and approximately three miles of paved road. Expect significant elevation gains, with some stretches climbing 1,000 feet over short distances.

The Swift Bear Trail Run provides a truly immersive experience, combining the rigors of mountain trail running with the rich traditions of the Hays Powwow, a vibrant celebration of Native American dancing, music, and culture. Aid stations are strategically placed along the course to support runners, with a strict 8.5-hour cutoff for 50K participants to reach the final aid station, approximately 10 miles from the finish. All races commence and conclude on the east end of the powwow grounds, where a white canopy and check-in table will greet participants. Typical race day conditions in early August include highs around 88°F and lows around 58°F, with a minimal 5% chance of precipitation. The 50K distance is a new addition for 2026, adding an extra layer of excitement for experienced ultrarunners.
