About This Race

Prepare for an unforgettable winter challenge at the Tanana River Challenge (TRC) in Fairbanks, Alaska, on March 14, 2026. This unique multi-sport endurance event invites runners, skiers, skijorers, and cyclists to tackle 25-mile or 45-mile distances across Interior Alaska's stunning frozen landscape. A modern revival of the cherished Equinox Ultra-Ski 100k Challenge, the TRC combines competitive spirit with a deep appreciation for the Alaskan wilderness and a vibrant community atmosphere.

The lollipop-style routes lead adventurers across the vast, frozen sweep of the Tanana River and through the serene, snow-laden Rosie Creek forest. Expect primarily flat, snowmachine-packed trails that vary in width, offering a firm surface on the river and potentially softer conditions in the woods. Racers will be treated to wide-open river views and the quiet beauty of the snow-covered forest. With typical race day conditions seeing highs around 24°F and lows near -4°F, and only a 1% chance of precipitation, participants can anticipate firm and fast trail conditions under what is often spring sunshine. Multiple volunteer-run aid stations provide essential support along the course, ensuring safety and sustenance for all participants.

Starting and finishing at the Tanana Wayside boat launch, the TRC culminates in a lively after-race party at the Ken Kunkel Community Center, fostering camaraderie and shared stories of endurance. This event is truly about embracing the endurance, community, and magic of an Alaskan winter.
