Prepare to challenge yourself physically, mentally, and perhaps even spiritually at the Temptation 200 Ultras, set to unfold on September 6, 2026, in Forest City, IL. This grassroots ultramarathon, known for its brutal yet unique character, offers distances of 150K, 50K, and 10K, alongside its formidable 200K namesake. The race is built around a distinctive "temptation" concept: many ultra-distance runners register for the 200K, with race directors actively encouraging them to test their limits, yet offering the option to claim official finishes and coveted awards at shorter distances like 50K, 100K, or 150K if the challenge becomes too great.
The course itself is a roughly 15.6-mile loop through the unique Sand Ridge State Forest, an ecosystem characterized by its soft, sandy soil and native prickly pear cactus. This sandy terrain is both a blessing and a curse; while runners generally benefit from dry feet with no mud or standing puddles, portions of the trail are soft and rolling, affectionately called "tank traps," effectively replacing major hills as significant energy drains. Runners will navigate primarily double-track and some single-track trails winding through hardwood forests, sand prairies, and pine plantations, experiencing mild elevation gain that is more substantial than typical flat rail-trail ultras. Gaiters are highly recommended to keep the pervasive sand out of your shoes. Aid is available with three aid stations strategically placed around the loop, including the "Devil's Aid Station" at mile 6.66, in addition to the start/finish area. Drop bags are permitted at the Devil's Aid Station.
Dubbed "The Malort of Ultras" for its tough, uncompromising nature, the Temptation 200 promises an unforgettable experience. Past participants describe it as one of the most unique ultras they've ever completed, with the deceptive sandy surface wearing runners down faster than anticipated. Typical race day conditions in early September see highs around 82°F and lows around 61°F, with a 15% chance of precipitation. Camping at the start/finish area is included, fostering a close-knit, grassroots atmosphere for those gritty enough to answer the Temptation.
