Both races commence at the Eagles Nest parking area in Thompson Park, situated just south of Butte. Runners will experience a truly unique course featuring the historic Milwaukee Road Trail, guiding them through captivating train tunnels—where a headlamp is recommended—and across breathtaking train trestles towards Pipestone Pass, which peaks at approximately 6,348 feet.
The terrain is predominantly single track (around 75%), with portions of double track, gravel roads, and pavement. The 25K course involves an elevation gain of 2,400 feet, while 50K participants will tackle two loops of the course for a total of 4,800 feet of elevation gain. Expect spectacular scenery, majestic mountain views, and rolling trails throughout Thompson Park. Aid station support is available, with a full aid station at Pipestone Pass (around mile 8.5) and a water station near mile 1. Typical race day conditions in late July include highs around 84°F and lows around 47°F, with a minimal 4% chance of precipitation.
