Prepare for an inspiring challenge at The Hero Hill Climb, set for Saturday, May 23, 2026, in the scenic mountains of Dahlonega, GA. This unique event offers both 10K and 5K distances, inviting runners, walkers, and mountain bikers of all ages to participate in a meaningful tribute. The course begins at Camp Merrill Army Ranger Base, leading participants on a 3-mile ascent up a smooth, hard-packed gravel road with a gradual 1000-foot elevation gain, providing breathtaking scenery throughout the journey. Typical race day conditions in late May bring comfortable highs around 79°F and lows near 54°F, with only an 18% chance of precipitation.
What truly sets The Hero Hill Climb apart is its profound mission: each participant receives a "Hero Card" bearing the name of a fallen service member to carry to the summit. At the top, a large Hero board, an American flag, and a cast iron freedom bell await, where you'll pin your card and ring the bell in honor of their sacrifice before descending. Aid stations offering water and food are strategically placed at the bottom, middle, and top of the course to support your efforts. Adding to the powerful atmosphere, participants will have the unique opportunity to walk alongside the 5th Ranger Army Training Battalion.
Upon completing your mission, every participant receives a special event Challenge Coin. The celebration continues with an after-party at "The Overhang," Camp Merrill's on-base bar & grille, featuring food, beverages, raffle giveaways, and live music. The Hero Hill Climb, now in its fourth year, is more than a race; it's a powerful statement of remembrance and support, with proceeds benefiting organizations dedicated to combating PTSD and preventing veteran suicide. For those who wish to participate but are concerned about the climb, "trail taxis" (UTV/SxS vehicles) are available to assist you up and down the mountain.
