Lace up your trail shoes for The Lakes TrailFest, an exhilarating journey through the stunning Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area in Palmer, AK, on Saturday, September 26, 2026. This event, organized by Black Wolf Endurance, caters to all abilities, offering a range of distances including 31M (50K), 15.5M (25K), 6.2M (10K), 3.1M (5K), and a 1.5M fun run, ensuring a challenge for every trail enthusiast. Runners can expect diverse terrain featuring often wet and slick singletrack, grassy paths, roots, leaves, and occasional fallen tree obstacles, all amidst breathtaking Alaskan scenery. The 50K course, a two-loop challenge, is rated as hilly with approximately 2500-7500 feet of elevation gain.
All races begin and conclude at the Matanuska Lakes Recreation Area campground, with staggered starts kicking off with the 50K at 8:00 AM. The courses are clearly marked with directional signs and colored flags specific to each distance. Aid stations will be available for longer distances: the 25K and 50K will have two main aid stations, with the 50K also having support at the start/finish area for its second loop, and the 10K will feature one aid station. Runners in the 5K and 1.5M races should plan to be self-sufficient as there are no dedicated aid stations for these shorter courses, and all participants are encouraged to carry their own water bottles for refills. Typical race day conditions in late September in Palmer offer crisp autumn air with highs around 54°F and lows around 39°F, with an 8% chance of precipitation, making for ideal trail running weather.
The Lakes TrailFest prides itself on a welcoming atmosphere, encouraging camaraderie and providing an opportunity for individuals and families to push their limits and connect with nature. Each finisher will receive a commemorative mug, and the top three male and female finishers in each race will be awarded. Additionally, all 50K finishers will receive an extra special award. This event is more than just a race; it's a chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Alaska while achieving your running goals.
