Prepare for an unforgettable challenge at the To Bone and Back 40M Relay and Ultra Marathon, set to take place on June 27, 2026, in scenic Idaho Falls, ID. This long-standing event, celebrating over three decades of tradition, offers both a demanding 40-mile ultramarathon for solo adventurers and a dynamic 40-mile relay, allowing teams of various sizes to share the journey. Typical race day conditions in late June bring highs around 82°F and lows around 47°F, with a minimal 2% chance of precipitation, creating warm and generally dry running weather.
The course itself is renowned for its formidable nature. Starting at Summit Orthopaedics in Idaho Falls at an elevation of approximately 4750 feet, runners embark on an out-and-back route that is 100% on asphalt roads, leading to the small farming community of Bone and back. Don't let the paved surface fool you—this is a very hilly and rugged race, featuring significant elevation gains, including a sustained 5-6% uphill grade between miles 5 and 10, and another mile-long climb on the return. While shade can be sparse, runners are treated to expansive views of the valley, picturesque farmland, and glimpses of cattle, hay bales, and towering windmills along the way. Aid stations are generously spaced every 2.5 miles with water, and every 5 miles are fully stocked with a variety of refreshments like sports drinks, energy gels, pretzels, candy, and fruit, ensuring ultrarunners are well-supported. Portable restrooms are also available at every 5-mile station.
What truly sets "To Bone and Back" apart is its vibrant atmosphere and strong sense of community. While offering a "TOUGH Ultra-Marathon" for individuals, the relay format, where teams carry a "Bone baton," fosters unparalleled camaraderie among participants. Upon crossing the finish line, ultrarunners are often celebrated with unique awards, including a heavy trophy and even a whole pizza. Beyond the race, a lively post-event party at Summit Orthopaedics offers food, a live band, and entertainment, making this a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience for all who participate.
