About This Race

Prepare for a true test of grit at the Vertical Mile Challenge, returning to Rocky Face Park in Hiddenite, NC, on June 20, 2026. This isn't just a race; it's an immersive experience designed to push your limits, offering either a full Vertical Mile (16M) or a Half-Vertical Mile (8M) across a relentless looped course. The challenge originated from a quest to conquer a vertical mile in the shortest distance possible, leading to a unique event that promises 5,280 feet of elevation gain and loss for those tackling the longer distance.

The heart of the Vertical Mile Challenge lies within its notorious 2-mile loop, which repeatedly brings runners face-to-face with the "Stairway to Heaven Trail." This half-mile ascent, an open rock face with a steep 20-30 degree grade, is often dubbed "the skillet" by runners due to its intense heat as the day progresses. Following the demanding climb, you'll navigate a mile of technical downhill, including 32 steps, leading back to the start/finish line. Typical race day conditions in mid-June bring highs around 86°F and lows around 64°F, with a 16% chance of precipitation, ensuring a warm and potentially humid challenge.

At the base of the mountain, the main aid station at the start/finish line is a beacon of support, stocked with water, Gatorade, soft drinks, a variety of salty and sweet snacks, and even pickles and pickle juice to combat cramps. Runners are encouraged to carry their own hydration, though additional bottled water is available at the top of the "Stairway to Heaven" and along the trail. Many seasoned participants utilize the paved section near the start/finish for personal drop bags or pop-up tents, creating a vibrant, self-supported atmosphere. Conquer this acclaimed course and earn your place among those who have truly embraced the vertical.
