Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Rocky Mountains and the plains of northern Colorado and southern Wyoming at the Wild West Relay, a challenging 200-mile team running adventure. Set for July 31, 2026, this point-to-point race begins at the Anheuser-Busch facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, and culminates at the base of Steamboat Mountain in Steamboat Springs. The course, divided into 36 diverse legs, winds across dirt country roads, paved sections, dirt forest service roads, and highway shoulders, offering breathtaking scenery including Red Mountain Open Space and dramatic views of the Mummy Range. Runners will conquer two significant mountain passes, including the Continental Divide at Rabbit Ears Pass (9,573 feet) and Sand Creek Pass (10,269 feet), pushing limits in the high-altitude environment.
The Wild West Relay, celebrating its 22nd year in 2025, is renowned as a "life-changing" and "team-oriented adventure" that fosters incredible camaraderie among participants. Teams, typically comprising 12 runners with two vehicles or six runners for Ultra teams with one vehicle, navigate the course themselves, responsible for their own aid and first aid kits as there are no official aid stations or road closures. Runners often share experiences of late-night spaghetti dinners at Woods Landing and the satisfying tradition of the entire team crossing the finish line together. Typical race day conditions in late July feature highs around 87°F and lows around 60°F, with a minimal 6% chance of precipitation, creating a true test of endurance and resilience.
Beyond the physical challenge, the Wild West Relay is celebrated for its unique atmosphere, encouraging decorated vans, costumes, and a spirit of fun as teams track "road kills" (passing other runners). Live GPS tracking and a dedicated app keep teams connected and informed throughout the overnight relay. Packet pickup and a pre-race meet-and-greet occur on Thursday, July 30th, at Runner's Roost in Fort Collins, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey through Colorado's stunning landscapes.
