Prepare for an unforgettable journey through Montana's stunning landscapes at the York 38 Special, set for June 1, 2026, in Helena. This acclaimed event, an annual fundraiser for the local volunteer fire department, offers three distinct distances to challenge every level of runner: the ultimate 76-mile "Spirit of 76," the demanding 38-mile "York 38 Special," and the scenic 13-mile "Lucky 13" family ride. Starting and finishing at the York Fire Rescue on Nelson Road, participants can expect typical race day conditions with highs around 70F and lows around 46F, with a low chance of precipitation, creating ideal running weather.

The course itself is a highlight, traversing spectacular scenery through the Big Belt Mountains, featuring incredible mountain overlooks, rugged canyons, and three refreshing creek crossings. The 38-mile options, including the "Bear Trap" and "Trout Creek" routes, predominantly follow dirt roads and single track, boasting an elevation gain of at least 3,000 vertical feet. The "Bear Trap" route adds an additional 1,000 feet of challenging climb on rugged single track, followed by a thrilling 2,000-foot descent, while the "Trout Creek" route winds through the beautiful Trout Creek Canyon. Those tackling the "Spirit of 76" will experience two loops of the challenging Trout Creek course. Even the 13-mile "Lucky 13" offers a delightful "out and back" experience to Vigilante Campground, with about half of its route paved.

Runners consistently praise the race for its fantastic atmosphere and well-supported experience. Six aid stations are strategically placed throughout the longer courses, staffed by dedicated volunteers and emergency medical personnel, and renowned for offering "famous homemade goodies" to keep spirits and energy high. An aid station and porta-potty are also available on the 13-mile route. Beyond the physical challenge and breathtaking views, participants often highlight the sense of community and the rewarding feeling of contributing to a vital local cause.
